The Spanish Government, under the command of the Troika (the IMF, the ECB and the European Commission) and using the deficit as an excuse, has developed a plan in order to reduce expenditure by removing redundant public organisms, mainly at regional and local levels. A further step towards the demolition of the Spanish (and European) welfare state.

During the last year or so, Spanish grassroot movements in defense of public services and the welfare state have gathered around thematic “citizen tides” or mareas ciudadanas. Activist usually bear a characteristic color specific for each one of those tides (e.g., green for public education and white for public health care).

Tomorrow, the 32nd aniversary of the attempted military coup d’état of 1981, all those colorful tides will march together along the country to denounce a new coup d’état carried out against our (deficient) democracy and the people.
