may-2013-15M

(en español)

In May 2013, during the Spanish 15M movement’s (equivalent and, somehow, precursor of OWS) second anniversary, Spaniards keep working on real democracy.

*No nos representan is one of the 15M’s slogans.

It’s so sad to witness how a small but powerful and extremely conservative minority is successfully pushing Spain back to its darkest periods during the 19th and 20th centuries. I’m not talking about economics now, this is about politics mixing with religion.

One out of 365 days we hear politicians talking about gender inequality. But discrimination happens all year round.

Happy International Women’s Day 2013!

During the last year or so, Spanish grassroot movements in defense of public services and the welfare state have gathered around thematic “citizen tides” or mareas ciudadanas. Activist usually bear a characteristic color specific for each one of those tides (e.g., green for public education and white for public health care).

Tomorrow, the 32nd aniversary of the attempted military coup d’état of 1981, all those colorful tides will march together along the country to denounce a new coup d’état carried out against our (deficient) democracy and the people.

Seagull apocalypse

seagull-apocalypse

(en español)

I guess I have to explain this cartoon a bit for those not familiar with Spanish politics. The seagull is the symbol of the Spanish ruling party, the conservative People’s Party, as the elephant and the donkey are the symbols of  the USA’s Republican and Democratic parties respectively.

The behaviour of this seagulls’ party is currently of major concern for most Spaniards.
